Subsea
Subsea is a term that generally refers to drilling or mining for oil and gas under the sea. It also refers to the equipment and technology.
Types of Rigs
Water Proofing
So that electrical equipment can be used underwater everything needs to be waterproofed. To be waterproofed wires are usually coated in rubber or plastic, to make sure water doesn't hit the electrical wires. To stop water getting into the rig, wires can be placed through rubber stoppers to make a round wire fit through a square hole.
Terms used in Subsea
Tree: A tree is like a tap and it contains lots of valves that can be opened and closed from the shore or from the platform. A tree uses about 100 Watts and takes approximately 18 months to build.
Pig: Pipe Inspection Gauge. A PIG goes inside pipes and cleans them. It is a cylendrical shape that pushes gunk to the end of the pipe so it can be emptied. They also can be intelligent where the pig measures the thickness of the walls of the pipes.
Jumper: A Jumper is a pipe that connects a tree to the manifold. Usually 14 inches in diameter.
Umbilical: A chord that runs from the platform to the manifold that contains optical fibre cables, hydraulics, chemicals and electricity.
