Jack-Up Rig
A Jack-up rig involves huge legs that can be lowered and lifted for moving the rig. They are pulled to a drilling site by barges or they are self powered. As the legs have been preloaded and will not penetrate the seafloor further, this nacking down of the legs only raises the jacking mechanism. The jacking mechanism is attached to the barge and the drilling package. This means that the entire barge is lifted above the water to a predetermined heigt. This also means that waves only affect the legs and not the platform.
